A Typical Towing Technician’s Day
As a towing technician there’s one thing you learn very early on: there’s no such thing as a typical day. As much as you try to create order and structure in your daily routine, you just never know what’s lurking around the corner. While no two days are the same, there are certain elements to be expected. To give you a better understanding of what it is we do, DocTow has put together this brief guide to our daily schedule.
Morning
Barring a callout the night before, morning begins as it does for most people; with coffee and breakfast. From there it’s off to the office where, believe it or not, there’s plenty to do. You might expect we sit around waiting for a phone call, but there’s more to it than that. Yes, we await that call, but we’re not exactly twiddling our thumbs. There’s paperwork (invoices, insurance questionnaires, tax receipts) to take care of; marketing plans to draw up (including social media implementation); queries to respond to; tow trucks to inspect; tool boxes to keep in order; and about a million other things. Any tow truck technician worth his salt will always be looking to improve his skillset, so reading up on the latest towing techniques and laws is worth the time and effort. Now, if we’re lucky we might be able to tackle one or two of the above before a call rings in.
Afternoon
The chances are we received a callout in the morning, so the afternoon will be likely be spent out on the road. Even if we tackled job No. 1 quickly, it’s highly likely we won’t be seeing the office any time soon. You see, towing emergencies are like buses – you wait ages for one and then three come along at once. In terms of being out on the road, we’ll tackle anything from a flat tire to a multi-car pile-up. Flat tires, flat batteries, and the likes are fairly easy to contend with, and can be quite a relief compared to the alternative. Drivers in need of roadside assistance, whilst somewhat anxious, are generally happy to see you.
In the event of a road traffic accident, things can get quite gory. Things can get very emotional too. We always hope that upon arrival everybody will be okay, aside a few bumps and bruises. It can be quite the eye-opener if they’re not. On the scene, we’ll liaise with the drivers and emergency services to find a suitable solution. Invariably, we end up towing a damaged vehicle to a police pound or repair shop.
Night
If this were a nine-to-five business, we’d be tucked up in bed come nightfall. Some nights we get lucky – other nights not so much. We’re on call 24 hours a day and, as we’re sure you’re aware, traffic accidents and vehicle malfunctions don’t abide by anybody’s timetable. That means tackling all kinds of issues after dark. Depending on how the day has gone, we may already be on the road or a late-night call may wake us. Either way, we’ll be behind that wheel heading to the scene looking to help someone in need. If we’re lucky, a return to bed might not be far off. If things don’t go according to plan, our nighttime coffee may be spilling into our morning coffee.
